Selecting the right manual wheelchair can be an overwhelming experience, but we’re here to help make the process a little easier. When researching manual wheelchairs, consider these four topics: 1) how the wheelchair performs; 2) the style of wheelchair; 3) what features come standard, and 4) what accessories can be added. In addition, because there are so many different styles of manual wheelchairs, be sure to choose a wheelchair that fits your lifestyle.

To begin, ask yourself these questions:

Will a caregiver be pushing the wheelchair?

If you answered yes, you will need to consider the weight of the wheelchair you select as well as your caregiver’s height. The caregiver height will help determine what type of push handles you need and how easily they can push the wheelchair.

Will the wheelchair be self-propelled?

If you answered yes, consider a lightweight wheelchair, and then determine how much weight you can propel effectively without tiring quickly.

Do you want to foot propel?

If yes, you will need to consider a hemi-height wheelchair with lower seat-to-floor height ratio to be able to foot propel efficiently.

Know your height and weight

When selecting a wheelchair, know your height and weight, as different wheelchairs come in different weight capacities, seat height, width and depth for proper support and positioning.

How much time you will spend in the wheelchair?

If you are going to spend more than four consecutive hours in a wheelchair, a wheelchair that is designed for extended use should be considered. Also, determine the necessary comfort features and accessories that can be added for a more comfortable ride.

How much traveling will you be doing with your wheelchair?

If you are going to travel and transport your wheelchair often, the folding capability and weight of the actual wheelchair will need to be considered. The weight of the wheelchair will help determine if you or your caregiver can lift the wheelchair on your own.

One great wheelchair to consider is the Cruiser family of wheelchairs from Drive DeVilbiss Healthcare. These wheelchairs are versatile, stylish and are offered in three different models — the Cruiser II, Cruiser III and Cruiser X4. This wheelchair has the unique ability to change the seat depth from 16”-18”. Along with that, the dual-axle (and the tri-axle frame on the Cruiser X4) frame enables users to select their preferred seat-to-floor position. The Cruiser wheelchair models have a carbon steel and aluminum frame, and composite mag-style wheels that are lightweight and maintenance free, and removable flip-back arms.

Below are the differentiating factors of each style of Cruiser wheelchair:

Cruiser II

The fully loaded Cruiser II is available in 16”, 18” and 20” seat widths, configured in a hemi position (lower seat-to-floor height) to accommodate individuals who want to foot propel. This wheelchair also offers its users 6” wheel lock extensions, anti-tippers, seat belt, 8” front casters that can be adjusted in three positions with either swing-away footrests or elevating legrests.

Cruiser III

The Cruiser III is available in 16”, 18” and 20” seat widths. This wheelchair comes equipped with push-to-lock breaks, 8” front casters adjustable in three (3) positions and removable flip-back arms for ease of transfer. Many accessories can be added to create a comfortable ride including a seat belt, wheel lock extensions, forward stabilizers and anti-tip wheels.

Cruiser X4

The Cruiser X4 is the lightest wheelchair of the Cruiser family, has a tri-axle frame and weighs 34 lbs. The rear wheels can be easily moved between three separate axles to adjust the ideal seat height or angle the seat back. It also comes equipped with either swing-away footrests or elevating legrests. The Cruiser X4 is also one of the two narrowest manual wheelchairs available on the market, with an overall, rim to rim width of only 23″, making it an ideal option for users with narrow doorways.

The Cruiser wheelchairs provide an option for every user, additional accessories and wheelchair cushions, which will provide users with a comfortable ride.
