What is a Calmoseptine Ointment?

Calmoseptine is a multipurpose ointment designed 70 years ago to fend for and treat dry, irritated skin. Today it is used for a spectrum of conditions, including:

  • Rashes,
  • Eczema,
  • Bed sores,
  • Insect bites,
  • Minor scrapes,
  • Burns,
  • Diaper rash,
  • Bacterial infections,
  • Diaper dermatitis,
  • Poison ivy,
  • Hemorrhoids,
  • Anal fissures,
  • Other skin irritations.

The cream is also helpful for shielding the skin from harmful biological fluids, such as rectal itch, skin folds, injured skin, urine and bowel incontinence, ureteral runoff, and feeder tube areas. The remedy aids in reducing potential damage spurred on by bed sores.

Key Components of Calmoseptine

The critical components of Calmoseptine ointment cream are Menthol (0.44%) and zinc oxide (20.6%). Zinc Oxide acts as an antioxidant and skin protector, whereas Menthol helps calm nerve fibers and regulate the circulation to alleviate pain, inflammation, and itchiness temporarily.

How to Use Calmoseptine Ointment?

Calmoseptine Ointment is solely aimed for topical usage only.

Use the product according to your specific situation. Here are some of the methods of using Calmoseptine cream:

General Usage for Intact or Injured Skin

  • Clean the damaged skin or area you want to apply the cream with a mild skin cleanser, normal saline, or water.
  • Gently dry the area or let it air dry.
  • Apply twice or four times a day or as required to ease and protect the skin. You can apply a thick layer, but it can get messy.
  • Removing the Calmoseptine cream as a moisture barrier is not mandatory upon every dressing or diaper change. Do clean the waste material thoroughly from the area.
  • Reapply the product if required.

For Diaper Rash and Adult Incontinence

  • Clean the skin with mild cleaner or water.
  • Rinse the area with water.
  • Pat dry the area with a towel or gauze.
  • Apply the Calmoseptine cream to cover the entire area.
  • Reapply the product after each incontinence episode or when the skin gets wet with urine.

*It’s not necessary to clean the cream thoroughly. Just cleanse the soiled area and reapply the cream where needed.

For Gastric, Jejunal, and Suprapubic Tube Sites

  • Clean the affected area and apply a thin layer of Calmoseptine cream around the tube.
  • Cover the ointment with a drain sponge or other suitable wound dressing to prevent drainage and keep clothes dry.
  • Apply the product twice a day. If the dressing becomes too drenched, replace it frequently. Avoid using thick dressing as it can worsen the situation.
  • Wipe away the drainage and reapply the product.

For Skin Folds

  • Wash the area gently and pat it to dry thoroughly.
  • Apply the needed amount of Calmoseptine Ointment.
  • Spread it over the skin gently and rub it well.
  • Apply at least once or twice a day.

For Periwound Skin

  • Pull out the dressing and cleanse the wound. Apply wound care solution to clean wound residue surrounding the area. Avoid scrubbing the wound edges.
  • Apply a thin layer around the wound.
  • Cover the wound with a relevant dressing.

*Tapes do not stick to a place where Calmoseptine cream is applied. Therefore take enough dressing to cover the entire area.

For Post-Radiation Therapy

Zinc Oxide in the Calmoseptine formula might cause complications with radiation therapy; therefore, it is strictly advised to cleanse the cream of the skin. However, the cream offers an excellent post-therapy treatment to soothe the discomfort caused by radiation burns

  • Cleanse the area in case of any soiled or drained remnants.
  • Apply Calmoseptine gently. Warming the tube in hot water before application softens the product and makes the application easier.
  • You can either cover the area with a dressing or leave it open,  whatever is convenient for the patient.

For Rashes and Insect Bites

  • Cleanse and gently dry the affected region.
  • Apply the cream to the rashes or dab it on insect bites.
  • Cover the area with a dressing or bandage, or leave it open.

For Weepy or Denuded Area

For weepy or denuded wounds, use stoma powder, karaya powder, and Calmoseptine Ointment for better adherence and result. It helps create a protective absorbent barrier around the wound.

  • Use normal saline water or wound cleanser to clean the wound.
  • Pat dry the area with sterile gauze.
  • Apply some stoma or karaya powder on the affected area. The powder creates a dry surface that allows the Calmoseptine cream to stick appropriately.
  • Dust off the excess powder. Reapply the powder lightly over the ointment.
  • To cover up the wound entirely, add another layer of Calmoseptine and powder.

Repeat the process after each diaper or dressing change. It is not necessary to remove the entire Calmoseptine each time. Clean the upper layer and reapply the product if needed.

How to remove the Calmoseptine cream from the skin?

  • To remove the Calmoseptine Ointment from the skin, baby oil and vegetable oil produce the best result.
  • You can also use skin cleansers with a surfactant to remove the ointment.
