What is a Multilayer Compression Wrap?

A multilayer compression wrap usually boasts 3 or 4 layers of compression. There are also 2 layer compression wraps, which have 2 compressive layers. When comparing multilayer bandages with unna boots and standard long-stretch bandages, multilayer bandages have been found to be the most effective option out there.

About 40% of people in the US have CVI (chronic venous insufficiency). Seniors are more prone to CVI than the younger population, and more women have this condition than men. These products can maintain compression for up to 7 days. They are designed to offer between 30 mm Hg and 40 mm Hg of pressure.

2 Layer Compression Wraps

2 layer compression wraps often feature one layer that is for compression, and a second inner layer that’s for the sake of comfort. Oftentimes the inner layer is made from soft foam or padding, and there is a short stretch compression layer on the outer side. (Short stretch bandages will have an extensibility, which is an added stretch, of between 30% and 60% of their original length.)

Two layer bandages are often used by individuals with mild to moderate arterial insufficiency. Arterial insufficiency occurs when a person’s arteries become narrowed or blocked, resulting in reduced blood flow. They are also used by patients with edema. Popular 2 layer compression bandaging wraps include the following options.

3 Layer Compression Wraps

3 layer compression wraps contain three layers, of course. They have an inner layer that is padded, a middle layer that conforms to the area, and a compressive outer layer. The padded layer of the three layer compression wrap protects protruding bones while absorbing exudate. There aren’t so many 3 layer compression bandage options, but the ones that we carry are very high quality.

4 Layer Compression Wrap

4 layer compression wraps are the most common multilayer compression wrap option. They typically include the following four layers: The innermost layer of a 4 layer compression bandage is a padding absorption layer (which usually works as the bandage, for exudate management). The next layer is usually a conformable crepe bandage, and keeps the area smooth so that the compression bandage(s) which will be placed on top of this bandage can achieve optimal results. Sometimes, instead, the second layer of the four layer compression bandage will be a short-stretch compression bandage. Layers #3 and #4 are usually both compression bandages (often, layer #4 is a cohesive or elastic compression bandage).
