Adult Briefs: Adult Diapers with Tabs

Adult briefs, or adult diapers with tabs, are designed for maximum wearable incontinence protection, with highly-absorbent cores and a variety of sizes to ensure a secure fit. Most diapers for adults are made with dry technology, an important part of maintaining skin integrity. By absorbing moisture quickly and locking the fluids inside the core, the skin is kept dry and safe from harm. Read more...

Get adult diapers if you’re dealing with moderate to heavy incontinence, especially if the patient is bed-bound. Severe fecal incontinence is also best managed with adult diapers. With their large area of coverage and highly absorbent cores, adult diapers provide the highest level of incontinence protection available. Similar to adult pull ups, adult briefs have tabs for easier removal when the user is bed-ridden or dependent on a caregiver, and are therefore recommended for less active individuals.

Women’s and Men’s Adult Diapers

If you’re looking for women’s or men’s diapers, keep in mind that incontinence diapers are not gender specific, since quality absorbent diapers are designed to be absorbent enough and fit well on both men and women.

If someone does have chronic leakage issues, rather than searching for adult male diapers or women’s diapers, it may be more helpful to find booster pads which can actually alleviate the leakage.

AvaCare Medical carries a full selection of unisex diapers for men and women that allows anyone with incontinence to retain their dignity and stay comfortable.

Best Adult Diapers: How to Choose

When choosing adult diapers, be sure to keep the following considerations in mind:

1. Reusable vs. Disposable Briefs: When purchasing diapers for adults, many individuals choose to save money and benefit the environment by choosing reusable adult diapers, although most people prefer disposable for the convenience of being able to simply toss them after use. Other benefits of disposable adult diapers include the large selection and often higher absorbency levels available.

When you make the decision of reusable vs. disposable briefs, keep in mind whether this will be a long-term or short-term solution, as well as your budget and time constraints.

2. Absorbency: While all adult briefs are designed to absorb high amounts of liquid, not all diapers are created equal, and the absorbency level will vary from one product to another. There are four levels of absorbency, ranging from light to overnight:

  • Light: These diapers were designed for individuals with infrequent or light urine leaks.
  • Moderate: These are the best adult diapers for those with significant, and often continuous urine leakage.
  • Heavy: These diapers are for those with heavy urine leakage. They can also be used by people with fecal incontinence.
  • Maximum: Also referred to as overnight diapers for adults, these are the most absorbent adult diapers to be found. Those with total incontinence and those with a very large amount of urine or fecal incontinence require super absorbent diapers such as these.

If the level of incontinence you are dealing with is moderate to high, consider a moderate or heavy absorbency level brief. For very heavy incontinence or overnight protection, consider a thick adult diaper or one that is designed specifically for overnight use and has a high SAP (super absorbent polymer) content level.

If you find that even with the appropriate absorbency level products, your patient or loved one is still leaking, we recommend purchasing bed pads to act as a secondary level of protection and protect your bedding and furniture from damage.

3. Size: To ensure the best fit when selecting an adult diaper size, check the measurement of the user’s waist and compare it with the recommended waist size for the brief in question. This is especially important since size names like small, medium and large vary greatly from one manufacturer to the next – and even one product to the next and cannot be relied upon for accurate sizing selection. When choosing briefs for adults, you may also want to look out for extra features such as odor control, breathable side panels, cloth-like outer material for a quieter and more discreet wear, as well as dry technology to ensure that the liquid is drawn away from the skin to prevent skin damage.

4. Comfort: When choosing leak proof diapers for adults, although absorbency and sizing are both very important features, comfort should be a primary characteristic to look out for as well. Take care to ensure that the diapers you choose aren’t irritating your skin, and work well for you.

Buying incontinence diapers that are the right size and absorbency level is important, so if you don’t already know exactly what you’re looking for, try our money-back samples program before you make your final decision.

Adult Diapers with Tabs Vs. Adult Pull-Ups

The main difference between the two is how they are donned: Pull-ups are pulled up like underwear, while diapers are placed directly under the patient and then closed with tabs.

In order to wear a pull-up, it needs to be pulled up the user’s legs, the same way standard underwear are put on. In contrast, adult diapers do not need to be pulled up the person’s legs; in order to put on an adult diaper, the pants don’t have to be removed.

The decision of whether to choose adult diapers with tabs or pull-up underwear is really dependant on how mobile the wearer is. If the person is able to put this on himself, he will most likely prefer pull-up underwear, which is easier for self-changing and is very similar to underwear.

If there is a caregiver involved, using an adult diaper with tabs will likely be much more practical, since the tabs are open before use so that the diaper can be put on easily, without the need to take the patient’s pants off.
